L is for Lion

This week has been a lion theme! We’ve read these books (and looked at a few others):

The Show-and-Tell lion by Barbara Abercrombie
We’re going on a lion hunt by David Axtell
Rory and the lion by Jane Cabrera
How Leo learned to be king by Marcus Pfister
Catherine and the lion by Clare Jarrett

I also took this opportunity to work with Samuel on the letter “L”. I asked him what “lion” started with & he said “L”. Oh. So I guess I didn’t have to teach him that. Ha! But he now knows how to spell lion, recognize the word, and drumroll please…. He wrote his first letter: The letter “L”! Here’s a pic (hint: it’s in the top right corner, and he also traced the letters on the left):

letterLWe learned some facts about lions. The fur on the daddy lion’s head is called a mane, the baby lion is called a cub, the mommy lion is called a lioness, they have sharp teeth & eat stuff like zebras & antelopes, among other things.

We read about the story of Daniel in the Lions’ Den & when I asked Sam “What do you think will happen when he goes in the lions’ den?” he answered matter of factly: “The lions will eat him but Jesus will save him!” So I guess he knows that one already as well. He’s really showing me up!

Here’s a puzzle I printed from online:

And here’s a lion face he colored, I cut out, then he glued together to put the face, eyes, ears, and nose in the right place (also from the same website):

Oh, by the way, if you’re wondering… His new way to pose for pictures is to stick out his tongue. Silly boy. I had to make him smile for that middle picture. The other ones I just let him do his thing.

This has been a fun theme this week. We’re planning on making a craft of a lion using some string-type stuff as his mane, possibly making a costume (hmmm. If I can find something to use…), making “lion food”, and watching the Veggietales version of Daniel & the Lions’ Den again. And we’ll probably re-read some of those books. So that’s our week for you! Hope you enjoyed it. 🙂
